Love monkton nature reserve. One of our favourite places to go. So relaxing and a nice amble around. They have a cafe and a book and gift shop. Plus you can buy plants. Lovely place
Really nice site with some exhibits, a cafe and bookshop inside the welcome centre. Very friendly staff and volunteers. Worth a visit if you’re in Thanet or passing by.
Monkton Nature Reserve is situated in a 16-acre abandoned chalk quarry on the Isle of Thanet in East Kent.
An amazing place to visit for everyone.
The volunteers are very knowledgeable and helpful to answer any of your questions.
There are the observatory, the museum, the bookshop and the little cafe there and lots of trails to choose from.
Open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm The last entry is 2:30 pm.
Great for any season!
Had a sneaky pop down to Monkton Nature Reserve, for the first time ever!!! I was pleasantly surprised, it has a lovely little museum and snack room. We were very out of season so it's mainly mud trails and minimal wildlife, but from what we saw this place will be amazing during the peak seasons.
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff and thus really is a hidden gem. Can't believe this is the first time I've visited.
If you like very natural environments and the simple pleasure of walking around different landscapes, then Monkton Nature Reserve fits the bill.
There is a trail for children to follow (we did too!), bird watching areas with binoculars, information boards and brass rubbing posts to learn more about a chalky grassland.
A small cafe is run by volunteers, a picnic area is outside and many seats around the trail.
There is a very good sized book shop and some natural history exhibits too.
Friendly, helpful staff.
Will definitely come again.
Super friendly staff - a lot of volunteer time and effort has clearly gone into this place. Fun little second hand book store and a museum packed full of local curiosities, fossils, artefacts etc. Cafe doesn't stock much (depths of winter though) but would be a cracking spot for a picnic. Not very push chair friendly, especially with the wet ground (wear your boots!) but a great way to kill a few hours in some very untypical Kent country side. Have yet to try the stargazing but would imagine it's excellent.
How did I live a stone's throw from this place but never visit!? Who would have known this little gem of a place was on my doorstep?! Joined as a member so we can visit often and through the seasons. Children loved running and exploring; following the pathways. Almost empty except for us and we enjoyed looking for the little fairies and their houses. These really looked like they had seen better days but my daughter loved this aspect of the walk none the less. The Nature Reserve was good for a couple of hours in the great outdoors and away from technology. We'll be back!!
